British TV was the big winner last night at the 71st Emmy awards
The Emmys are an American award that recognises excellence in the TV industry. This year, for only the fourth time, there was no host, similar to the Oscars in February.
It was a good year for streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, who between them received 164 nominations; while HBO received 137 nominations, 32 of which were for the final season of Game of Thrones. The two other programmes with the most nominations were Chernobyl, 19, and Barry, starring Bill Hader, with 17.
The biggest award of the night, Best Drama was won by Game of Thrones, which was up against Bodyguard and Killing Eve. From 32 nominations, in total, the show won just 12 awards, which just maybe confirms what many people already knew about the lacklustre and divisive eighth season.
Fleabag won the Best Comedy award, while Chernobyl won the Best Limited Series award. Netflix won two best show awards with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch winning the best TV Movie award and Our Planet winning the Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
In the individual awards, two British leading ladies stood head and shoulders above the rest as Phoebe Waller-Bridge won Best Actress, Comedy for ‘Fleabag’, while Jodie Comer won Best Actress, Drama for ‘Killing Eve’. The male awards were more of an American affair with Bill Hader winning Best Actor, Comedy for ‘Barry’ and Billy Porter winning Best Actor, Drama for ’Pose’.
Fleabag earned two more awards on the night, bagging the Best Director award for Harry Brad
beer and Best Writing for a Comedy Series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
After her third win, Waller-Bridge said: “Well, this is just getting ridiculous.” She had stated that the show’s second season will be its last and seemed to confirm this decision despite the success last night: “To be honest, this feels like the most beautiful way to say goodbye.” She could also take praise for the awards Killing Eve won as she created that show too!
Amazon Prime ended the night on a high after winning Best Comedy for the second year in a row and had its second-highest awards total with seven. Two out of three of the highest winning shows, Fleabag and The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, belong to the streaming giant.
