Man’s Best Friend Posted On 04 August 2021

4th August marks Assistance Dog Day

Dog owners know that our canine companions truly as man’s best friend. Their constantly wagging tails and excitable personalities can teach us a lot about appreciating the smaller things in life.

There are lots of benefits to owning a dog. They help you to stay active. Whilst it can be difficult to motivate yourself to go out for a walk when its drizzly or cold, one look into the adoring eyes of your dog and the knowledge that it really is the highlight of their day will soon persuade you to zip up your coat and head out. Having a dog is also a great way to meet new people, whether it’s on your daily dog walk or when first attending puppy classes. Dogs also lower your blood pressure. According to Harvard University, studies have shown that dog owners have lower blood pressure due to the increase in exercise and the mere presence of your dog. Just petting or stroking a dog has been proven to reduce blood pressure. Lower blood pressure makes us feel calmer and less stressed too, so next time you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, reach for those cuddly ears! Dog owners also have stronger immune systems, recover faster from illnesses and even have higher survival rates after a heart attack.

Some dogs are trained to do even more than the amazing benefits listed above. Assistance dogs are trained to support people with disabilities and medical conditions. Assistance dogs change, and often save, the lives of their owners and their families.

Bobbie Hubbard-Marks spoke to SCOPE charity about her dog, Poppy, and how Poppy has made life have purpose again. Bobbie explains, “Poppy helps me in all sorts of ways, from opening doors and cupboards, helping me to dress and undress, fetching things, picking things up and even loading the washing machine…I’ve got independence again now and can go out on my own. I am a human being again. Whatever I need Poppy to do, she will do it. She’s given me back my life.”

Assistance dogs truly transform the lives of their owners and let’s face it; our lives are all a little better with our cuddly companions! If you’d like to support one of the amazing charities providing and training support dogs to those who need it, consider donating at:
